Raw fish not invited to party

“Itadakimasu!” (“bon appetit” in Japanese) is what New Yorkers will be hearing on Sunday at the latest street fair being thrown as part of Japan Town, the annual NYC event that celebrates Japanese culture. Following the Cool Japan and Healthy Food Green Festivals held this summer, this weekend’s Soul Food fest will show that Japanese food is not only about sushi and sashimi.

Among the different regional home-style cooking, the island of Kyushu, located in the south of Japan and believed to be the motherland of Japanese civilization, will be present through its traditional and popular eats, such as ikinari dango (dumpling potato with red bean) and nikumai onigiri (pork-wrapped rice balls). Vendors from the Kyushu prefectures will also be part of the event and will occupy a block with their stands offering a taste of their home.

Once you have a full belly, stroll around and enjoy the regional Japanese merchandise, the raffles for airline tickets and anime products.
