The TD Garden is best known as home of the Bruins and the Celtics, but it also hosts World Wrestling Entertainment whenever Vince McMahon’s pro wrestling empire swings into the city. Plenty of wacky stuff went down during and after last Sunday’s Survivor Series pay-per-view, including a brief chant of “YES! YES! YES!” breaking out on the North Station platform in homage to “The Flying Goat” Daniel Bryan — because everyone loves the most brutal vegan in sports entertainment. Meanwhile, despite his years as a top good guy and his local-ish origins, John Cena retained his world title in front of several fans brandishing “CENA SUCKS” signs. We chatted up these two dudes to find out what’s really up.
Why does John Cena get booed in Boston?
Gregory Woodberry: Some people like him, some people don’t. He’s actually from West Newbury, so it’s not considered Boston. That’s a misconception a lot of people have.
I didn’t see the show, but I’m assuming the Wyatt Family had to beg CM Punk and Daniel Bryan for mercy?
Walter Clark: That match was kind of disappointing. The Wyatt Family’s usually dominant, and they got bullied around. Daniel Bryan was kicking their asses, and I’m thinking, “He’s a little guy, and he’s beating up these guys who are, like, 6’4?” And Punk just didn’t look like himself. He looked like he was injured, or tired, or wasn’t into the match. And that Big E Langston guy, he’s terrible, and they had him facing that Curtis Axel kid. He’s “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig’s kid, but he’s nothing like Curt Hennig.
Perhaps they should call him “Mr. Imperfect.”
WC: It makes me mad, because they have good superstars and they don’t know what to do with them, like Dolph Ziggler and Rey Mysterio. They just have them sitting on the back burner.
I think Ziggler’s so good at pretending to get beat up, they just have him lose every match.
WC: But you watch him, and you’re entertained! He makes it look believable. Some of these other guys make it look like ballet.
Do you think the Iron Sheik could’ve improved the show?
WC: He’s always drunk and stuff. In every interview, he’s drunk, or high like Rob Van Dam. They wouldn’t even let him in the building.
All-time favorite wrestler?
WC: “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase. He was a really good bad guy, and he was good at making good guys look better than they actually were.
GW: Mine is “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. I mean, him being badass just says it in a nutshell. His presence and energy always got me pumped. He went way above…words can’t even describe.
And that’s the bottom line.
