Revealing many facets of Latino life

Four months into his new job, Ballet Hispanico director Eduardo Vilaro launches his first New York season, showcasing two premieres and a vintage crowd-pleaser. Formerly in charge of Chicago’s Luna Negra, Vilaro also brings new dancers to the BH ensemble.

Oscar Hernandez’s new composition supports “Triptico,” a series of decorative duets and group arrangements by Ron de Jesus. A fictional nervous breakdown dominates Annabella Lopez Ochoa’s “Locked Up Laura.”

The most ambitious new work on the BH bill, Andrea Miller’s “Naci,” sets five women and three men on what seems like a fraught journey, dressed in peasant clothes. To a collage of Spanish-sounding music, they spill across the stage, sometimes lip-synching, intensely engaged in an exploration of Sephardic culture.
