The Oscars were just about to wind down to a soft landing when Sean Penn came out on to the stage to present the last award of the night.
Instead of just going with the plan and letting everyone know what film won the Oscar for Best Picture, Penn made an immigration joke.
Before announcing that Mexican director Alejandro Iñárritu’s “Birdman” had just one best picture, Penn shouted “Who gave this son of a b***h a green card?”
It was an odd way to end the night.
Twitter responded by both shaming Penn for his joke, and reminding the world of allegations that he had physically abused Madonna:
Sean Penn personifying everything wrong w the academy wowwwwie
