Stop by Hops & Hocks and grab a meat cone

Yes, this is what a meat cone looks like. Yes, this is what a meat cone looks like.

As if their 200 beers, 100 flavors of cured meats, cheeses, mustards, coffees, pickles — you name it — weren’t enough, the beer and charcuterie retail store Hops & Hocks that opened in Bushwick this November now has one more reason for you to pay a visit. For $8, folks can get a cone filled with a variety of meats — and 10 percent off any size of beer with purchase of one.

We asked manager Blake Jordan how he got the idea for filling cones with meat instead of the usual ice cream.

“I was looking for ways to think about eating charcuterie in addition to deli-style counter service,” he says, mentioning that they also have a Barcelona-inspired ham bar.

It looks like other places are picking up on the meat-cone trend.

“The meat cones .. were first experienced by a friend in the Embarcadero in San Francisco,” he says. “I saw just the other day that the famous Zingerman’s Deli in Ann Arbor, MI, is now offering meat cones, so it looks as if they may be making their away across the continent.”

Jordan tells us that they are starting with an all-Italian cone, with Mortadella forms the base, Sweet Sopressata, and Finocchiona — “a meaty, uber-salami studded with fennel seeds” — plus crostini and cornichons.

If you would like to take use of the 10 percent beer discount, he recommends pairing the cone with the Brooklyn-based Grimm Going Awry, “a zippy Belgian strong pale ale, currently on tap.”
