‘Supernatural’ recap Season 9, episode 4: ‘Slumber Party’

Felicia Day Felicia Day

It’s computer time, with Sam and Dean – and Charlie, the red-haired hacking wonder! Open to old-timey flashback with 1950s-style Men of Letters at the bunker. The two dudes are manning the bunker, drinking from flasks, wearing sweater vests, playing chess and being very 1950s. A hunter named Dorothy — female! — shows up bearing gifts – well, a witch.

Back in 2013, Sam and Dean are still keeping Crowley in the back room. Sam and Dean argue about why Cas decided not to stay (we’re looking at you, Dean). They discuss methods to track angels, which apparently Sam discovered on his own (yeah, right). They find an old 1951 mainframe. It’s an entire room. The computer is warm, they pry off the back, see a bunch of vacuum tubes, accidentally knock over a horror in a jar … the usual Saturday.

Back in the ’50s, the menfolk are very impressed that the lady hunter could capture anything, especially a witch who can’t seem to be killed. The witch escapes, runs rampant and infects the younger guy, who stabs at the older one, but gets stabbed himself. He dies wishing to remain a geek and not an adventurer. He didn’t sign up for this.

Back in the new millennium, the Winchesters bring in the big guns – Charlie, the only red-haired computer geek they know. Turns out, she’s dabbling in hunting. She wishes hunting were more magical and quest-like. So do we, darlin’. She discovers the computer is kind of a bad-thing-tracking-thing. Apparently the girl knows her way around vacuum tubes, and she somehow manages to plug her laptop in and track her some angels – well, at least, pull the data into her laptop. Meanwhile, Sam and Dean talk to her about hunting alone, and she reveals there have been more “Supernatural” books on the Internet – Ed (who’s maybe God?) has been busy, for all he’s missing. Sam and Dean argue about whether their bunker constitutes a home. Touchy topic, apparently.

The goo they knocked over has become this musty thing on the wall, apparently containing a body – the female hunter! Charlie is very excited, Sam and Dean are very logical, the female hunter is confused and kind of anachronistic. She reveals they couldn’t find a way to kill the witch. In a flashback, she shows how she did a binding spell to capture the witch in the jar, but she got sucked in as well, and the witch is loose!

The witch comes to Crowley. Witch can’t speak, but Crowley’s got a pen. Sam and Dean go to look for the witch, and it turns out the female hunter is L. Frank Baum’s daughter (We’re not in Kansas anymore, Dean). Charlie defends the Men of Letters, and says that the old-timey dudes had actually figured out a way to get the witch – poppy bullets. Yeah, Wizard of Oz, totally real. Dorothy’s been there, and apparently it’s a war zone. Girl’s seen things.

Sam and Dean come to see Crowley. Oz references abound. Crowley knows what the witch wants, but wants to make a deal. They let him out of his restraints and he reveals she wrote down “key.” He says he told her they keep the keys in the kitchen.

Charlie gives them four poppy bullets – won’t kill her, but set those Winchesters to stun! Dorothy reveals the key is a portal to Oz. Real place. The witch plans on ruining the magical land. Turns out, Dean has the key, somewhere beneath his porn collection in his room, apparently. Dean wants Charlie to play it safe, but Charlie’s quest mode is activated. Dorothy tells Sam she’s can’t believe she’s been away for 75 years. The witch attacks them and escapes through the air vents.

Wicked-and-tongueless grabs the key out of Dean’s hands. She goes to electrocute Dean but Charlie bravely jumps in front of him. Is she dead? Dean is about to cry! Charlie! Dean calls on Zeke, who reveals she’s gone. Felicia Day! No! Zeke says he’s weak, and can either help with the witch or save Charlie, and of course Dean picks the latter. Good choice, Dean. First one this season. Zeke faints and wakes up Sam. Dean lies.

Sam and Dean go after the witch, and Sam asks why Dean said the name “Zeke” before Sam passed out. Dean lies. Not well. Consider Sam suspicious! Meanwhile Dorothy and Charlie talk, and Dorothy says that Charlie definitely died when she got zapped. They bond. Charlie cheers her up with the revelation that the Oz books are actually guides. They go to the garage, where Dorothy finds her motorcycle and magic red heels.

Sam tells Dean that he’s never had a home, and Dean defends the bunker, totally in a complete reverse of Season 1. The witch attacks and infects them both, ordering to kill the girls. Charlie tries to reason with them. Dean attacks her. They reveal the witch wants to bring her flying monkeys to the real world! Egads! The witch opens the door to Oz, which apparently has been in the bunker the whole time. Way to properly explore, Sam and Dean.

Charlie kicks Dean in the nuts (Dean! No!) and runs off with the red heels, while Dorothy fights the Winchesters. They overcome her easily, but Charlie manages to stab the witch with the magic heels and close the door. Enough magic for one day, Charlie? When she opens the door without the key, it’s just a stairwell. She’s rather pleased. Whatever gives you your kicks, Charlie. Nerd.

Unimpressed, Sam and Dean lock Crowley back up and head back to the garage, where Sam and Dorothy bond over having a bunch of books written about them. Charlie tells Dean that she knows he brought her back from the dead, and he makes her keep it between them. Dorothy heads back to Oz, and offers to take Charlie with it. Charlie’s totally in. The girls go have adventures, the boys head back to their books and beer. Sounds about right.
