The beauty of staying green

Ecolodges are the leaders in exotic, green tourism — and Hitesh Mehta, the author of the new book “Authentic Ecolodges,” has been to them all. “I focused most of my life for the last 15 years to ecolodges,” he says. “It’s the new luxury.”

Ecolodges provide beyond five-star amenities, including world-class culinary experiences, extraordinary views and authentic cultural exposure on private resorts that are almost hidden in natural surroundings.

From Canada to Egypt, Bolivia to South Africa, these lodges are not only beautiful, they’re also good for the environment. And Mehta — who is also an architect, landscape architect and sustainable tourism planner — helps to push that eco-friendly agenda.

“It’s all about awareness. Part of the money is going to protect the environment, part of it is going to benefit local communities and part of it provides a rich cultural experience.”

As for “Authentic Ecolodges,” Mehta hopes the beautiful coffee table book will also celebrate the craftsmen and craftswomen, the architects and the local engineers who create such beautiful places.

“It is time now in 2010 that we start worrying about taking care of the earth. We need to make a difference — and ecolodges are making a difference,”?says Mehta. “It’s about a strong environmental and social responsibility; but at the same time, you’re in a very comfy place.”
