The four best Super Bowl commercials

The commercials from last night’s Super Bowl were almost as underwhelming as the game itself. Nevertheless, there were some standouts.

Audi, “Doberhuahua”

Freakish? Cute? Funny? Maybe all three? Seeing the “Doberhuahua,” a hybrid between a Doberman and a Chihuahua, was funny. But what was better was the cameo by Sarah McLachlan, in a nod to those tear-jerking ASPCA ads. But what does this have to do about selling cars again? Also in the running for top dog was Budweiser’s “Puppy Love” which featured an adorable puppy being saved by a loyal Clydesdale

Chevrolet, “Life”

This cinematic spot hardly featured a car; just a woman with very short hair in a passenger seat, looking out the window. She grabs her husband’s hand and tears up at the beauty of the world. “This Tuesday is World Cancer Day,” read the text at the end of the one-minute ad. “Join Chevy and the American Cancer Society in celebrating survivors and those who support them on the road to recovery.” Sob.

Kia, “Luxury”

Does KIA say luxury to you? Does “The Matrix”? Well, it does to Laurence Fishburne, who reprised his role as Morpheus in this spot. “This is what luxury feels like,” he said before climbing into a back seat of a KIA while singing “Nessun Dorma” as other cars blow up around him. Yeah, we don’t get it either but it was a highlight in a night full of duds.

Budweiser, “A Hero’s Welcome”

What could be more tear-jerking than cancer? A young soldier coming home to his family from Afghanistan, that’s what.
