Kermit the Frog and his Muppet cohorts haven’t graced the silver screen since 1999’s “Muppets from Space.” So where has the amphibious star been hiding? If his film, “The Muppets,” is any indication, Kermit has become a hermit, cloistered in the massive Beverly Hills mansion he used to share with Miss Piggy (now an editor at French Vogue), speaking to almost no one besides his 1980s robot butler/chauffeur. But the famous frog wants to make it clear that the mansion and the seclusion are all for show.
In the film, you’re portrayed as rich and out of touch. How true to life is that?
Well, that’s actually not true at all. We felt like that made a better sort of idea for the story; but no, that’s not true. I think my fans know who I really am. I’m a pretty simple frog. When I’m not working, I go back to the swamp, relax and take it easy. I’m not really a part of the whole Hollywood scene, and I’ve never felt the need to have a big mansion.

Metro’s logo is green. Do you think it would be easier for us if we’d chosen a different color?
Well, I don’t know. I think you guys should stick to green. As I say, it’s the color of spring, it’s beautiful. I have no choice, so let’s just say you have no choice also.
Are there any causes that are close to your heart?
Well, obviously the environment. I mean, I’m a frog. Us frogs are sort of the barometers for the environment, like the canaries they used to take into the coal mines.
In this political climate, how do you think it would be received if a frog were to marry, say, a pig?
The truth is I think it’s probably not legal in most states ... But that’s probably a lucky thing for me in the long run, you know? I don’t think Piggy and I are actually going to tie the old knot, so to speak. So, I’m not pushing for it.
Does she know that?
Does she know I’m not pushing for it? I think she knows. I think she’s, as they say on “Dr. Phil,” in denial. By the way, I can only tell you this because she’s in a separate room. If she were here, I’d have to go along with it.
No reality stars for ‘The Muppet Show’
With early buzz on “The Muppets” strong and positive, talk has quickly turned to the possibility of bringing back the show that started it all, “The Muppet Show.” The original series ran from 1976 to 1981 and featured an impressive run of guest stars. So if the show were to return, who would Kermit like to see stop by?
“I look back at the old shows, and we had the top Hollywood folks,” Kermit remembers. “Hopefully we could get the same kind of caliber of stars now — the few that are left out there, you know? Nothing against reality TV, but I think if we did nothing but the Kardashians on ‘The Muppet Show,’ it would be a little strange. So I hope we get the Tom Cruises and the Harrison Fords, you know?”
