In case you haven’t heard, old man Gene Simmons of Kiss doesn’t like the idea of rappers being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Fame, and the recent addition of N.W.A. has only stoked that dislike.

And see, Ice Cube tried to be nice about it, he really did, telling the New York Times, “I respect Gene Simmons, but I think he’s wrong on this, because rock and roll is not an instrument and it’s not singing. Rock and roll is a spirit. N.W.A is probably more rock and roll than a lot of the people that he thinks belong there over hip-hop. We had the same spirit as punk rock, the same as the blues.” But then Simmons took to Twitter to respond, “Respectfully, let me know when Jimi Hendrix gets into the Hip-Hop Hall of Fame. Then you’ll have a point.”

Which … he will? I mean, that thing hasn’t even been built yet. Neither one is letting it go, though, as Cube responded, “Who stole the soul? Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Chubby Checker help invent rock and roll. We invent it. Y’all reprint it.” Come on, guys. Can’t we all just agree that successful, influential artists of all stripes are welcome to pretend they’d ever visit Cleveland on a regular basis?
