‘The Walking Dead’ recap: Season 4, Episode 4, ‘Indifference’

Rick and Carol make a run for supplies in 'Indifference.' Rick and Carol make a run for supplies in ‘Indifference.’

Indifference, or how the characters deaden themselves in order to survive, is at the heart of the latest episode of “The Walking Dead.”

Carol takes center stage as Rick asks her to make a run to a nearby neighborhood to find life-saving antibiotics to take care of the survivors who are sick with the flu back at the prison.

At the end of the last episode Carol admitted that she had killed the first two survivors to come down with the sickness. “I did it in order to protect the others,” she said.

Rick struggles to reconcile the Carol he knew with the one who makes cold, calculated decisions based on what she thinks is in the best interest of the group.

While he struggles with what to do with Carol, Daryl, Tyresse, Michonne and Bob the medic are on the run from the walkers and on their way to a veterinary college that has a stockpile of medical supplies.

As they run, each deals with their demons. Tyresse battles with hopelessness that he may not be able to save his sister. Michonne questions why she is always on the run and can’t get close to anyone. Bob explains his alcoholism and how one of the survivors got killed because he was trying to steal a bottle of booze from a store that they raided.

Back at the subdivision, Rick and Carol run into two college-age kids on a foraging expedition. The kids were trapped in a bathroom by a walker. After Rick and Carol free them, the two plead to go to the prison. Rick asks the two to stay in the house until they get back but Carol is adamant that they help search the nearby homes. Against Rick’s wishes the two groups split apart to hit the other houses.

After hotwiring a car and making it to the college, the other group stumbles upon a huge cache of medicine. As they make their getaway, the building is overrun with walkers and they must escape along a window ledge. Bob almost loses his backpack, and as he yanks it from a group of walkers the bag spills and a bottle of wine rolls onto the ledge. He didn’t collect medicine after all. Daryl threatens to throw the bottle away. Bob unhitches his gun as if he’s going to shoot him. The four make it back to their van but it is obvious that a rift has opened between the others and Bob.

As they rummage through the last house, Rick and Carol discuss the murders and her past. Rick tries to get her to talk about her daughter Sophia who died in Season 2, but all Carol says is, “She’s dead.” They wait for the kids to come back. When it’s been too long they go outside and discover the young girl has been torn apart and walkers are feasting on her. There is no sign of the boy.

The episode concludes with Rick telling Carol that she can’t come back to the prison. He warns her that if Tyresse finds out she killed his girlfriend that he would kill her. He also suggests that she was responsible for the college kids getting killed. Carol loads up a car with supplies and drives away. Rick goes back to explain what happened to the others.
