The Word: Katy Perry thought about suicide

Katy Perry went through some pretty dark times following her split from ex-husband Russell Brand, writing one of her new songs, “By the Grace of God,” about the time she found herself on the bathroom floor considering suicide, she tells Billboard magazine.

“That song is evident of how tough it really was at a certain point,” she says. “I asked myself, ‘Do I want to endure? Should I consider living?’ All the songs are real-life moments. I can only write autobiographically. I put all the evidence in the music. I tell my fans if they want to know the really truth about stuff, just listen to the songs.”

It is really, really hard not to be snarky about this as who knows if Katy Perry battled with depression or not. As there are some things you just don’t joke about [see: children, pedophilia, Michael J. Fox]. Look, divorce is rotten. It sucks. But she was 27-years-old at the time of her split. It was Russell Brand. She is Katy Perry. Like, she must have realized she would pull through this and go onto bigger and better men (or, you know, John Mayer). That, or she just listened to “Firework” on repeat until she got up from the bathroom floor.
