The Word: Matt Damon to Ben Affleck Batman detractors — “how about dem apples, nerds?”

Speaking of the everyone making a big stink out of nothing on the Internetz, remember when it was announced that Ben Affleck was going to play Batman and everyone FREAKED THE EFF OUT?

I do. I almost had to cancel my Facebook account, because if I had to read one more rambling, misspelled diatribe about how Ben Affleck playing Batman was going to speed along Global Warming or give babies AIDS or whatever it is that people are afraid is going to happen when this perfectly attractive, perfectly competent movie star plays a guy in tights, I was going to gouge my own eyes out with a rusty spoon.

Because, why you so mad, bro? I personally did not even know there was going to be yet another installment to the Batman franchise (I guess my question would be, “do we need one?”) nor do I give a good crap who is going to star in it. (By the way, didn’t we all freak out like this when we found out Heath Ledger was going to be the Joker? I feel like I remember that happening.)

Anyway, Ben’s best buddy Matt Damon feels the same way I do (great minds think alike, you guys) and expressed as much in an interview with The Times of India.

“I know there are a lot of people grousing on the Internet. I just think it’s kind of funny. You know, he’s not playing King Lear. It’s Batman!” Damon said. “[That’s] certainly within his skill set. If anybody saw ‘Argo’ or ‘The Town,’ and all the work he’s been doing lately, it’s way more nuanced and interesting and way more difficult than Batman! Batman just sits there with his cowl over his head and whispers in a kinda gruff voice at people.”

I really couldn’t have said it better so….I won’t.
