The Word: Shonda Rhimes on Sandra Oh’s ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ departure

After nearly a decade play prickly, brilliant surgeon Dr. Cristina Yang, Sandra Oh announced yesterday that she intended to leave “Grey’s Anatomy” at the end of the upcoming season. Boo! If I still watched “Grey’s Anatomy,” Sandra Oh would definitely be why.

Sounds like “Grey’s Anatomy” showrunner Shonda Rhimes pretty much agrees (although she does presumably still watch the show every now and again, when “Glee” is a rerun.) “I would hope that it wouldn’t be happening — but I also know Sandra, and I know that it’s time for her to have new challenges. I get to have new challenges all the time because I get to create other shows, but she doesn’t get to do that, so I fully understood it,” she told the Hollywood Reporter.

Rhimes added that because they have a whole season to craft her exit, Dr. Yang will get a great final storyline. “That story isn’t about her leaving the show as much as it is Cristina Yang’s growth as a person and as a surgeon,” she said. “Cristina Yang is not going to magically decide she wants babies, no.”

Whew. No word on what will happen to Cristina’s relationship with her main squeeze, Owen, since Kevin McKidd is staying on the show. Rhimes says “No comment.”
