Theater openings and closings, Aug. 4

Metro is on hand to help you plan your theater calendar for this week. Here’s what’s happening:

Opening

‘First Date’

On Aug. 8, Zachary Levi (star of NBC’s “Chuck”) and Krysta Rodriguez (NBC’s “Smash,” “The Addams Family”) open the new Broadway musical “First Date,” by Austin Winsberg (book), Alan Zachary and Michael Weiner (music and lyrics) about a blind-date newbie who gets set up with a serial dater. ‘Forever Tango’

Luis Enrique, the Grammy Award-winning Nicaraguan singer, known as El Principe de la Salsa (The Prince of Salsa), joins the cast of “Forever Tango” for a limited engagement through Aug. 18. Creator and director Luis Bravo’s 16 world-class dancers and live orchestra play for a limited time through Sept. 15. Tickets are on sale at Forevertangobroadway.com.

Closing

‘Unconstitutional’

This week is your last chance to catch “Unconstitutional,” written by and starring Colin Quinn, about 226 years of American Constitutional calamities in 70 minutes. Last performance is Thursday, Aug. 8. Tickets are on sale at Colinquinnunconstitutional.com.

‘The Castle’

This play by Howard Barker, starring five-time Tony Award nominee Jan Maxwell, is about a group of Crusaders that comes home from adventure and conquest to find known society upended and replaced by a new culture designed by the women who were left behind. The last performance is Aug. 4. Tickets are on sale at Ptpnyc.org.

‘The Explorers Club’

Final performances this weekend of “The Explorers Club,” by Tony Award nominee Nell Benjamin, about a men’s club in 1879 London. The acting president wants to admit a woman, and their bartender is terrible. Last show is Aug. 4. Tickets are on sale at Manhattantheatreclub.com.
