It’s a slow week before the boom of long-awaited fall theater shows. Here’s what’s opening and closing in the meantime:

OPENING

‘The Old Friends’

Written by American playwright and screenwriter Horton Foote (“To Kill a Mockingbird”), “The Old Friends”opens Thursday, Sept. 12. Acquaintances from two longtime Texas farming families are forced to confront issues surrounding legacy, loyalty and happiness when they get some alarming news. The show is directed by Michael Wilson and starring Tony winner Betty Buckley (“Sunset Boulevard,” “Cats”), Hallie Foote (“The Orphans Home Cycle,” “Dividing the Estate”) and Lois Smith (“Heartless,” “The Trip to Bountiful”). CLOSING

‘The Awake’

It’s your last chance to see “The Awake” tonight. In this show, three characters struggle to discover what is real and what’s a dream. It is written by Ken Urban and directed by Adam Fitzgerald. The cast includes Maulik Pancholy (“Weeds,” “30 Rock”). Tickets are on sale at www.59e59.org.

‘The Tempest’

Don’t miss the end of a three-night run of “The Tempest” at the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park that began Friday, Sept. 6 and has its last show tonight. Creating a new model of engagement between artists, audiences and the community, The Public Theater introduces a new program: Public Works. For its inaugural performance, 200 New Yorkers share the stage with professional actors in a new original adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy.
