Thursday gossip roundup: The John Travolta gay rumors pick up steam

A former secretary for John Travolta says the actor — who’s currently being dogged by multiple sexual assault accusations from men — is gay, according to the National Enquirer. “Of course I knew he was gay. It never bothered me,” says Joan Edwards, who worked for Travolta from 1978 to 1994. Edwards claims she learned firsthand details from another former employee, Doug Gotterba, who worked as a pilot for Travolta starting in 1981. “He told me that John was gay and they had a sexual relationship.” Travolta’s attorney has yet to comment on the story.

Angelina Jolie celebrated her 37th birthday this week, but there was no lavish party, according to Us Weekly. “It was a very small bash — just the family at home. They didn’t go out or do anything,” a source says. “Just a simple one at home with a cake. No frills, but they’re all really happy at the moment. Everyone’s doing good.” Home right now means the rented Wentworth Estate in Surrey, England, which Jolie and Brad Pitt are reportedly spending $24,000 a month to rent out.

Charlize Theron doesn’t regret many things, but she does regret letting herself be auctioned off for charity. “Do not do it. It’s like the worst idea ever, ” Theron tells Conan O’Brien during an interview. While she went through with the blind date with the highest bidder, she admits she “made two girlfriends sit at the restaurant” nearby. “The closer I got, I thought: ‘This could actually turn out really bad. Rich people can be creeps, too! They can rape,” she says. “Look, I would rather just give the money [to charity]. It was a scary thing. And [the guy] was weird.”

Miley Cyrus is getting married to Liam Hemsworth, and now she has the massive diamond to prove it. Jeweler Neil Lane tells People magazine that Hemsworth asked for “something really beautiful and romantic,” so Lane produced a one-of-a-kind gem: It’s “a 3.5-carat cushion-cut diamond ring, handcrafted in 18-karat gold with intricately carved diamond floral motifs in an art nouveau pattern,” he says. At the center is an antique diamond that hasn’t been re-cut since the 19th century. Cyrus, for her part, seems pleased, posting to Twitter, “I feel like all my dreams are coming true.”

Amanda Bynes is sticking to her story that she was not drunk when she drove into a police car in April. Bynes’ lawyer entered a plea of not guilty on her client’s behalf in court this week, according to TMZ. If convicted, Bynes faces a maximum of six months and a minimum of 48 hours in jail. Her next court date is July 18. Bynes continues to maintain her innocence, going so far as to petition President Barack Obama via Twitter to have the officer who arrested her fired.

The way Charlie Sheen sees it, he’s come a long way since his famous flameout last year, telling Rolling Stone that he’s now sober — for the most part. “I don’t see what’s wrong with a few drinks,” Sheen says in the interview. “What’s your drink? Tequila? Mine’s vodka. Straight, because I’ve always said that ice is for injuries.” Speaking of injuries, Sheen still feels slighted by the way Hollywood pushed him aside after his famous feud with his former “Two and a Half Men” boss, Chuck Lorre. “I was blackballed in this friggin’ town. I had to generate my own stuff, to say ‘I’m not done yet,'” says Sheen, whose new show, “Anger Management,” is premiering this month. “I’m not done because they say I’m done.”
