Producer, director, Oscar-winning actor ... app developer? Tom Hanks has channeled his love of vintage typewriters into an iPad app, Hanx Writer, his first foray into the field. The app replicates the sound and feel of hammering away at a manual typewriter, from clacking keys to a satisfying "ding" when the end of a line is reached.

"Hanx Writer is just my little gift to the future Luddite hipsters of the world," Hanks, who hasn't been shy about his love of manual typewriters, tells USA Today. "Really it's for people searching for a more personalized experience when writing on an iPad. There's also the opportunity here to take your iPad to a coffee house and be really obnoxious with all the clickety-clacking."

While the app itself — along with a basic black typewriter face — is free, users have to pay for other, flashier vintage looks. Two upgrades are currently available — an aqua Hanx 707 and a gleaming white Hanx Golden Touch — for $2.99 a pop.
