The British actor will play a 19th-century adventurer in “Taboo,” a drama produced by Ridley Scott for the BBC.

Hardy will play Keziah Delaney, an adventurer who returns from Africa in 1813 with a pocket full of ill-gotten diamonds. Following his father’s death, which he is eager to avenge, the character refuses to sell his family business to the East India Company, determined to build his own trade empire instead. Delaney soon finds himself in a dangerous position between two nations at war, England and the United States.

Scheduled to begin shooting in the UK in January 2015, “Taboo” will be produced by Tom Hardy and Ridley Scott. The series was created by Steven Knight, who recently directed Hardy in “Locke,” due in US theaters on April 25. Knight and Hardy will soon reunite on the set of “Peaky Blinders,” the BBC Two series launched by Knight last September. The actor accepted a role in the show’s second season.

In the meantime, Hardy will share the screen with Noomi Rapace in two films: “The Drop,” due for release in September, and “Child 44,” produced by Ridley Scott. The following year, the actor will headline “Mad Max: Fury Road” and will play Elton John in the biopic “Rocketman.”
