1 ‘Insidious: Chapter 2’
It’s only been three months since director James Wan and Patrick Wilson scared the bejeezus out of people with “The Conjuring,” so here’s another. Enjoy it, as Wan is now stuck in the “Fast & Furious” franchise.
2 ‘The Family’
Eurotrash auteur Luc Besson (“The Fifth Element,” “Taken”) sucks Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones (plus executive producer Martin Scorsese) into his insane orbit for this comic actioner about an ex-mafia boss (De Niro) under witness relocation who’s found by the mob.
3 ‘The Patience Stone’
Golshifteh Farahani is nearly the only actress in this drama, which captures an Afghan woman caring for her comatose husband and using the occasion to rant to him (or at least to herself) about her worries.
4 ‘Terraferma’
Winner of Best Film at the Vienna Film Festival, this drama from Emanule Crialese (“Golden Door”) tells of the inhabitants of a small Sicilian island who debate whether to help illegal immigrants.
5 ‘Riddick’
Did you know Vin Diesel’s “Pitch Black” character’s full name is Richard B. Riddick? Anyway, he’s back, even though no one saw “Chronicles of Riddick.” Maybe it’s because Diesel’s big again — or back in the “Fast & Furious” films he once abandoned.
6 ‘Instructions Not Included’
Many were surprised two weekends ago when this vehicle for Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez cracked the top five at the North American box office, having the best ever debut for a Spanish-language film.
7 ‘Therese’
Audrey Tautou once again plays downbeat in this adaptation of Francois Mauriac’s novel “Therese Desqueyroux,” about a 1920s woman who regrets marrying a sugar daddy.
8 ‘Afternoon Delight’
The great character actor Kathryn Hahn (currently groping Jennifer Aniston in “We’re the Millers”) goes center stage, playing a well-off mother who whimsically hires a stripper/prostitute (Juno Temple) as her young son’s nanny.
9 ‘Short Term 12’
Former teen pop star Brie Larson gives an admirably dour performance as a young caretaker at a residence for at-risk kids who finds that one of her young charges may be harboring a horrible secret.
10 ‘One Direction: This is Us’
Why, yes, Morgan Spurlock did make a concert movie about the boy band One Direction.
