Metro's Wednesday night TV breakdown.

‘Modern Family’

COMEDY. Gloria faces off against a mean mom at school in a war that comes to blows in a dodgeball showdown. The mean mom is played by Jane Krakowski, who we have sorely missed since “30 Rock” ended.
9 pm, ABC

‘American Idol’
COMPETITION. Season 13 — whoa. It’s part one of a two-part season premiere and judges J.LO, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. are back to sift through all the crazy at the preliminary auditions and pick the hopefuls who can actually sing. That’s all fine and good, but we mostly want to see Connick Jr. and Lopez get it on. The sexual tension is more intense than the competition.
Season Premiere, 8 p.m., FOX

‘Real World: Ex-plosion’
REALITY. Only two episodes in and this new season already has us, once again, thinking that the producers should really require applicants to undergo a thorough psychological screening before allowing them to appear on television. But that would take all the fun out of it, we guess.
10 p.m., MTV
