Castaways premiere

ABC’s new reality series, Castaways, has been described as "Survivor-meets-an unscripted Lost" — though we think it also has that Naked and Afraid vibe. Twelve strangers are scattered, alone, on a stretch of islands in the South Pacific. The Castaways premiere is tonight, and you won't want to miss it.

These people have two options: survive until the rescue party arrives (by themselves or with others), or quit. It all sounds so familiar yet intriguing nonetheless (primal instincts, you know?).

Grant Kahler serves as showrunner, and Castaways is produced by Nomad Entertainment, reports Deadline.

More to know about the show before the Castaways premiere

Castaways poses the ultimate question: can these people, far removed from their lives back home, survive long enough to be rescued?

ABC describes Castaways as "a revolutionary series testing the human need for companionship under extreme circumstances as each individual learns there are other castaways out there but are unaware of how many, their locations or when they will be rescued."

The contestants range from age 20 to 62. There’s 41-year-old Tracee, a "self-described super mom," 24-year-old aspiring country artist Kenzi and retired U.S. Army member Tim, 50.

The castaways "dropped alone throughout various islets in Indonesia and challenged to survive among washed-up luggage, scattered resources and abandoned structures. ... As dramatic situations unfold on an expanse of islands in the South Pacific, the series flashes back to the real lives of each participant in documentary fashion, demonstrating haunting parallels to the lives they left behind." You can view the biographies of these 12 contestants on the ABC website.

What time does the Castaways premiere start?

The Castaways premiere starts at 10:00 p.m. ET Tuesday (tonight) on ABC. It comes after the season 5 premiere of Bachelor in Paradise, and you can stream it through AppleTV, FireTV, Roku or AndroidTV.

If you aren't near a TV, you can stream the Castaways premiere live on abc.go.com/watch-live or on the ABC app available for iOS and Android.

In addition, people with subscriptions to Hulu Live TV can stream the Castaways premiere tonight.

You’ll be able to watch the Castaways premiere on abc.go.com following its air date (new episodes are usually added the day after they air).

To appropriately quote the Hunger Games, may the odds be ever in (their) favor.
