Everything we know right now about the Halo TV series on Showtime

Halo TV series Showtime

Get ready Halo nation, because things are finally heating up for the Halo TV series on Showtime. Rumors about the show have been swirling for years, but it sounds like the highly-anticipated adaptation of the hit video game franchise will be heading to the small screen in the very near future. Here’s everything you need to know about Showtime’s Halo TV series.

What is the Halo TV series about?

The Halo TV series was first announced in 2013 with Steven Spielberg attached as an executive producer. There was then talk of Neill Blomkamp directing the pilot and that Showtime was interested in the show way back in 2014, with a tentative release date of fall 2015 to coincide with the debut of the Halo 5 video game. Of course, none of that came to fruition and there was virtually no mention of the Halo TV series, that is, until Showtime announced in June that it had picked up the show for a 10-episode order.

The network revealed that Kyle Killen has been tapped to serve as the writer, executive producer and showrunner for the Halo TV series, while Rise of the Planet the Apes director Rupert Wyatt will serve as an executive producer, as well as direct several episodes for the first season. During the Television Critics Association summer press tour, Showtime president and CEO David Nevins along with president of programming Gary Levine revealed even more details about the series.

“It is a very different genre, it’s futuristic, space-based science-fiction, it’s not fantasy,” Nevins said. “It took us a long time to get the script but we felt like we had something that was really interesting and felt like it belonged on Showtime in terms of its character depth, and it’s gonna be a big show.” He added that they “wanted to ensure that we were getting beneath the formidable armor of the Spartans and really getting inside the team drama so it felt like it belonged on Showtime.”

According to IGN, Levine revealed that the show is “a new story but we are being incredibly respectful of the canon” and have been working with the Microsoft team to ensure that. He also told the website that the Halo TV series will in fact have Master Chief as its lead character and that the show would take place on “multiple locations” on “foreign planets.”

Halo TV series cast

As of now, there’s been no casting news for the series, although we expect Showtime to tap a notable name to take on the mantle of Master Chief, even if the mysterious character’s face is never seen. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with his trusty AI Cortana as well. We’ll update this page with more info once it’s announced.
