Are you feeling the feminist power in the air today, because tonight’s the night Supergirl season 3 episode 1 finally airs. Are if past seasons are any indicator, you’ll feel ready to tackle some bad guys of your own the minute the closing credits roll.
What can you expect from Supergirl season 3?
But get ready for a darker turn at the beginning of this season. You’re seeing Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) shrug off her Kara Danvers persona and lean into her superhuman reality, but not out of a place of strength and fearlessness. If anything, the complete absorption into her work is a way to mask a lot of fear and loss the character is dealing with.
“She’s really fragile at the top of the season, but only people closest to her will see that, because she’s almost solidified on the exterior and is really trying to push down whatever pain she’s felt about losing Mon-El,” Melissa Benoist told EW when she opened up about what to expect in the third season of the show. It’s dangerous for the defender of Earth, which she very much proved herself to be in the finale of the second season, to turn her back to fiercely on humanity — and she really does. “In turn, she has made this massive decision to say goodbye to her humanity and really embrace being an alien. We hear her say quite a bit in the first five episodes, ‘I’m not a human, I come from a different planet, so this doesn’t apply to me.'”
This shift in perspective and occupation with her loss understandably puts a strain on all of her close relationships while those closest to her also struggle with their own problems. Get ready for all of that strain to come to a head between Supergirl and Alex, Lena and more in the upcoming season.
