Tyler Glenn, the lead singer of Neon Trees, revealed in the new issue of Rolling Stone that he is gay.
Glenn, 30, has been a Mormon his whole life and says he knew he was gay as a child, but has kept it a secret – until now.
He told Rolling Stone, “I had my crushes on guys throughout high school, but it was never an overwhelming thing until my 20s. Then I’d be dating girls and in love with my straight friend, and it was the worst feeling in the world.”
The singer first started coming out to his friends and family in October 2013, but said he felt it was about time the rest of the world knew as well. The band’s latest album, “Pop Psychology,” addresses Glenn’s former years in the closet. Glenn said he was inspired to speak up after a variety of men and women in pop culture came out publicly. He was especially inspired by NFL player Michael Sam, knowing there’s a lot at risk for him, yet still being willing to take on the controversy regarding his sexuality.

As for his religion, Glenn said, “The only time I ever felt different was when the Prop 8 thing came up.”
Back in 2008, the church of his upbringing spent millions of dollars fighting same-sex marriage in California. Aside from the controversy between his faith and his sexuality, Glenn tweeted, “Yes. I am a happy and healthy Mormon gay pop star. I don’t know what it all means, but I’m ok with it.”
