At this point, the only noncontroversial thing you can say about the gun control debate in America is that it's kind of a disaster. And one of the go-to excuses for why mass shootings aren't caused by gun control issues is that they're committed by the mentally ill. In the wake of the Oregon shooting last week, John Oliver addressed the topic head-on in "Last Week Tonight," showing clips of presidential contenders Donald Trump, Ben Carson and Mike Huckabee emphasizing that this country has a mental health problem, not a gun problem, before demolishing the idea that mass shootings are always caused by the mentally ill.
He's got plenty of statistics to explain why mental illness isn't really the problem here, but uses that concept as a springboard to demonstrate all the ways in which America is failing the citizens who do suffer from mental illness.
