Video: John Oliver takes on the issue of transgender rights in America

While the recent Supreme Court decision is a landmark ruling in civil rights for the LGBT community, John Oliver used his most recent episode to explore how far we still have to go when it comes to transgender rights in America. From the media’s insensitive fixation on the surgical choices of transgender people to the military’s inconsistent application of its own rules regarding transgender people to even day to day tasks that prove impossible or painful, the country still has a long way to go. As Oliverpoints out, when a visit to the DMV is somehow even worse than the average horrendous visit to the DMV, it’s probably a sign that we’re still lacking in progress on this issue.
