Every summer there’s a song that you just can’t get out of your head, no matter how dumb it is. I’m sure we all vividly remember Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe.”
This summer we have Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines,” accompanied by a highly NSFW video. We’ve added the video above, but don’t say we didn’t warn you about watching it at your cubicle.
In the video, Thicke and Pharrell dance around naked women while singing lines such as “I know you wanna.”
A number of people have come out calling the video sexist, distasteful and degrading for women. Some critics even dubbed the song “rapey,” with the lyrics “blurring” the lines of consent.
“For me it’s about blurring the lines between men and women and how much we’re the same,” Thick told BBC’s Radio 1. “And the other side, which is the blurred lines between a good girl and a bad girl, and even very good girls all have little bad sides to them.”
Thicke also responded to the criticism of the song and video being misogynistic.
“I can’t even dignify that with a response; that’s ridiculous,” he told BBC’s Radio 1. “I don’t want to be sleazy, I’m a gentleman, I’ve been in love with the same woman since I’ve been a teenager. I don’t want to do anything inappropriate.”
If there’s one good thing that’s come from the music video it’s all the parodies it has inspired.
Below we take a look at some of the funniest joke videos which all drew inspiration from “Blurred Lines.”
1. Desserts
Who doesn’t love desserts? Whether it’s a cake, a donut or a delicious pastry, this girl loves dessert so much, she wrote a song about it using the “Blurred Lines” music and video theme.
2. Cougars
An ode to cougars with lyrics such as “Here’s an observation: You’re the oldest chick in this place!”
3. Puppets
College Humor re-enacted the video, exchanging nude girls with puppets. With this swap, the video went from R-rated to kid-friendly.
4. Blurred House
In this parody, “Blurred Lines” meets “Full House.” Who doesn’t enjoy watching John Stamos and Bob Saget dancing?
5. Cosby Show
“Full House” isn’t the only television show that got the “Blurred Lines” treatment. The music and dancing in the opening credits fit so perfectly, you’d think Robin Thicke sang the song for “The Cosby Show.”
