What you didn’t see at the VMAs

We spotted these shenanigans from our seats at the Barclays Center on Sunday night.

2013 MTV Video Music Awards - Show

Lady Gaga is a diva and isn’t afraid to show it: After her opening number — which started with a single camera closed in on her face — she took three bows with her dancers and was carried off stage by one of them.

The hotly anticipated ‘NSYNC reunion did indeed happen, but poor Chris Kirkpatrick still can’t catch a break after all these years. After the group’s 90-second number, trap doors were supposed to open underneath and lower the men down. Kirkpatrick’s malfunctioned, however, leaving him standing on stage solo for a little while, waving awkwardly. He finally accepted defeat, crouched down and leaped down one of the other working doors. Womp womp!

One Direction may have won for the fan-voted Song of the Summer, but they got booed when they stepped up to the podium for their award. Lady Gaga stood up for the boys, though, and the episode didn’t seem to ruin their night — they were dancing to Drake’s performance and chatting it up with Rihanna from their seats back in the audience.

Katy Perry let out a big “Roar” from the Brooklyn Bridge for the show’s final number, but attendees at the Barclays Center weren’t all feeling it — many got a head start out of the arena while her performance blared across the jumbo screens.
