Everything you need to know about Alice Munro, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature on Thursday.

Who is Alice?

Alice Munro, whom the Nobel Prize committee called the “master of the contemporary short story,” is an 82-year-old Canadian author. She may not be Buzzfeed’s idea of sexy, but she has cool credibility, winning the Man Booker International Prize in 2009 for her lifetime body of work (alongside Philip Roth and Chinua Achebe). And you’ve must have read at least one of her works, maybe in the New Yorker or Mademoiselle.

Is there one big book she’s known for?

She’s known more for her style — human, reflective, regional, often set in a small county in Ontario, Canada — than for any one book in particular. The short story collections "Open Secrets," “Dear Life” and “Dance of the Happy Shades” would be good places to start.

Have I seen any of her movies?

Alice Munro is an author.

I know, but have any of her books been made into movies?

Yes. Her story “The Bear Came Over the Mountain” was turned into the 2006 drama “Away From Her.” Directed by actress Sarah Polley, it scored an Oscar nomination for Julie Christie, whose character suffers Alzheimer’s.

I’ll Netflix it. Anything else?

Yes, a piece from the same book, “Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage,” is being made into a movie now, starring Kristen Wiig from “Bridesmaids."

Does the Nobel Prize come with a cash award?

More than $1,000,000.

Holy—

I know.

Would I have been rich if I'd bet on her?

You’d have made money. Odds were 4-1; the frontrunner was Japanese author Haruki Murakami.
