For ‘Artpop,’ China lifts Lady Gaga’s three-year-long ban

Lady Gaga has fashioned a career out of wowing (and shocking) audiences with her envelope-pushing performances and wildly outrageous outfits, both on stage and off. Who could forget the infamous meat dress from the 2010 MTV VMAs? Or her dramatic emergence, after ‘incubation’, from a giant, egg-shaped pod at the 2011 Grammy’s? But these antics, while ridiculous, are largely innocuous. Which is why China’s decision to blacklist the pop queen back in ’11 proved just as laughable as some of La Ga’s most cartoonish stunts.

The country’s government blacklisted the flamboyant musician after the Culture Ministry deemed her repertoire a risk to the nation’s “cultural security.”

Lucky for China’s Lady Gaga fans, Gaga has been removed from the Chinese government blacklist, allowing her chart-topping new album “Artpop” to go on sale legally in China — but not without a bit of censorship.

Besides having to change the song title “Sexxx Dreams” to “X Dreams,” the Chinese government also insisted on tweaking the album’s cover art, adding black tights to the singer’s spread-eagle, bare legs.

Gaga tweeted about the news, saying she was “so excited” and is already looking ahead to possible live shows in the conservative country. Whoa, whoa Lady Gaga, one step at a time.
