The Word: YouTube star Lucas Cruikshank comes out

If you’re over the age of 20 or never did much babysitting, this might not mean much to you. But it’s a pretty big deal.

Lucas Cruikshank, who created the wildly popular YouTube and Nickelodeon character Fred Figglehorn, just came out as gay in his most recent video. In a fan question and answer session with his friend Jenny (who also might be a YouTube star? I’m not under the age of 20, guys), a number of fans asked Lucas, “Are you gay?”

You can watch their cute response below. (Don’t worry, Lucas doesn’t come out doing the Fred voice.) Jenny actually comes out on his behalf — she blurts out “He’s gay!” before Lucas confirms it, blushing all over. “My family and friends have known this for like three years,” he says. “I just haven’t felt the need to announce it on the internet.”

Aww. It’s a sign of how far we’ve come that he can come out so casually without a tidal wave of hate coming his way. Just, you know, the normal amount of hate he gets for creating the most annoying character ever.
