The Edmonton Eskimos started the day with no picks in the first round of the CFL Canadian College draft but general manager Danny Maciocia had some different ideas for the day.
The Eskimos traded their ninth and 22nd overall selections to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in exchange for a first round, sixth overall pick. They followed that up by trading their 19th and 27th overall picks to Hamilton for the Tiger-Cats’ 12th overall pick.
With their first pick the Eskimos selected defensive tackle Brian Bulcke out of Stanford. The native of Windsor, Ont., missed most of the 2009 season with a wrist injury, but still has a year of college eligibility left.
With their second pick the Eskimos selected defensive back Saleem Borhot out of St. Mary’s. Borhot comes from Calgary and was a member of the CJFL’s Okanagan Suns before joining the Huskies.
Maciocia said he’s pleased with how this year’s draft unfolded.
“We went into the draft with the mindset of quality over quantity and we achieved that goal,” he said in a release. “The overall feeling is a good one and we look forward to see what these young men will contribute to the team.”
In the fifth round the Eskimos selected offensive lineman Scott Ferguson out of St. Cloud State University and they finished the day by picking a local product, Corbin Sharun, a defensive back who spent 2009 with the Edmonton Wildcats.
In other Eskimo news, defensive back Scott Gordon retired yesterday.
“I treasured each season I played in the CFL,” Gordon said, looking back on his career. “I’m thankful to all my teammates, coaches and the support staff who I worked with over the years.”
The Eskimos signed Gordon as a free agent in February 2009. Prior to that, he spent six seasons with Saskatchewan and one with Hamilton.
