ESPN: We fired Curt Schilling

ESPN says baseball analyst and former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling has been fired for sharing a controversial Facebook post this week that was critical of transgender individuals using the bathroom that corresponds to their identity.

“ESPN is an inclusive company,” a statement on the network’s website reads. “Curt Schilling has been advised that his conduct was unacceptable and his employment with ESPN has been terminated.”

Schilling’s post shows a man wearing a wig, women’s clothing and a t-shirt with holes cut into the chest to reveal his nipples. The shared post was later deleted from Schilling’s Facebook wall.

“Let him in!” The post read. “To the bathroom with your daughter or else you’re a narrow minded, judgmental, unloving, racist bigot who needs to die!!!”

“A man is a man, no matter what they call themselves,” the three-time World Series champ commented on the post, according to the New York Times. “I don’t care what they are, who they sleep with, men’s room was designed for the penis, women’s not so much. Now you need laws telling us differently? Pathetic.”

Schilling also doubled down on the claims in a rambling blog post he published Tuesday.

“This latest brew ha ha is beyond hilarious,” he wrote. “I didn’t post that ugly looking picture. I made a comment about the basic functionality of mens and womens restrooms, period.

“You will NEVER in your lives find a single person who’s met me/knows me who would ever say I treated them as anything other than a human. None. Wouldn’t you assume that all of you offended folks would have heard of me treating people the way you needed me to treat them, to be what you so desperately want me to be?”

So far, Schilling has not publicly commented on his firing.

It’s not the first time Schilling was the focus of widespread criticism for his social media posts. In September, he was temporarily taken off the air at ESPN after sharing an image that compared Muslims to Nazis.
