Event helps young people rethink breast cancer

One year ago, Karyn Stowe decided to leave her kids at home and get dressed up for a night out with girlfriends. It ultimately saved her life.

Stowe, a 38-year-old mother of three attended a sassy fundraising party, called Hello! Sailor, with 600 other revellers, the proceeds of which went to Rethink Breast Cancer — a charity founded in 2001 by MJ DeCoteau to educate and support young people affected by breast cancer.

The next day, she decided to do a breast self-examination and found a lump.

It turned out to be cancerous and Stowe underwent a mastectomy. In a roundabout way, she has DeCoteau to thank.

Essentially, DeCoteau wanted to put breast cancer on the radar of young women in a fun way without scaring them.

This year’s fundraiser, called Prohibition, Glamour Goes Underground is certain to be another hit.
