Evergreen Brick Works has lots for the kids

With free skating, winter markets and plenty of kids’ workshops, the Evergreen Brick Works makes it easy to shake off the winter blahs.

The former Don Valley Brick Works building near Bayview Ave. and the DVP is the site of family-friendly learning and fun put on by national charity Evergreen.

Free skating at the site’s large Skating Trail is a top draw for families — just remember to bring your own skates. The site also hosts a year-round farmer’s market every Saturday, perfect for stocking up on fresh food and ingredients directly from local farmers.

The Holiday Market offers a chance to pick up some last-minute artisanal gifts all week long Monday, Dec. 20 to Thursday, Dec. 23 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and kids can enjoy a wealth of exciting baking and craft workshops for cost by donation only.

Evergreen spokesperson Anthony Westenberg says one of Evergreen’s goals at the Brick Works is to promote healthy, active lifestyles.

“Being active and living an active lifestyle is a big part of our Canadian culture and it is important, especially in the winter, so promoting it is something we’re big on,” Westenberg said.

The Brick Works is also doing a skate drive this year so visitors are being encouraged to donate their old skates as they lace up their new ones to hit the ice — the skates will go to Evergreen’s school education program for underserviced communities.
