Ex-school worker charged with Internet luring

TRURO, N.S. – A former educational assistant at a Nova Scotia junior high school has been charged with luring a child over the Internet.

Police say 53-year-old Todd Canton of Truro was also charged Monday with invitation to sexual touching.

Truro police Chief Dave MacNeil says an investigation was launched Jan. 4 in response to a complaint of inappropriate contact between a student and a staff member on a social networking site.

A spokeswoman for the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board says Canton has not been an employee of the board since Jan. 10 and no longer works at Truro Junior High School.

Carolyn Pierce says the school board launched an internal investigation after a concern was raised regarding a staff member.

She declined to discuss the nature of the concern, and would not say whether Canton was fired or if he resigned.

Canton has been released from police custody and is due in Truro provincial court on Feb. 15.
