Authorities are investigating the overnight death of former Texas and Ole Miss quarterback Jevan Snead, although foul play was not initially suspected, according to the Austin American-Statesman. He was 32.

The newspaper cited multiple officials in Austin and a source close to the family in its story, adding that police were revealing few details early Sunday.

Snead, from Stephenville, Texas, was one of the top recruits in the country in the 2006 class, flipping his commitment from Florida to Texas. He played in eight games for the Longhorns as a true freshman, but another freshman, Colt McCoy, won the quarterback job, prompting Snead to transfer to Ole Miss.

He sat out one season and started for the Rebels in 2008 and 2009, throwing for 5,394 yards with 46 touchdowns and 33 interceptions in two seasons before leaving early for the 2010 NFL Draft. He was not selected, later signing a free agent deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, although he was released twice, including in September of that year.
