Calgarian Colin Morgan will be setting up his steel drum at city hall and the EPCOR Centre throughout the Fringe Festival, which begins today.

The Fringe Festival hits centre stage in downtown Calgary beginning today.

“We’ll have a real presence in the downtown area this year,” says Blair Gallant, producer of the festival.

A theatre festival that also includes visual arts, street performance and film screenings, Calgary’s Fringe will operate at venues that include the Glenbow Museum, Canadian Legion #1 and EPCOR Centre for the Performing Arts.

Acts that range from x-rated poetry to the sounds of a steel drum will create a strange and wonderful mix of entertainment on Calgary’s streets until Aug. 19.

“The Calgary Fringe is a place to see some amazing performances,” says Gallant. “It’s a grab bag — you never know what you’re going to see.”

Known for an environment of wide-open creative expression, Calgary’s Fringe will feature 36 theatre companies, street performers, muralists and 60 independent films over the course of the 10-day event.

International acts, performers from across Canada and local artists will all converge for the first Fringe event held in this city that will concentrate the majority of its efforts in the downtown core.

A performer who will be offering “Fringers” a completely different vibe is Calgarian Colin Morgan. He will set up his steel drum at city hall and the EPCOR Centre throughout the festival.

Morgan’s father is from Trinidad but this Canadian-born master of the steel drum is less interested in performing classic tunes from the Caribbean than covering songs from Canadian acts such as Trooper.

“I learned to play the steel drums in Canada,” he says. “So that’s my culture.”
