Facebook key to murder charges

Police say Facebook posts made by an 18-year-old Calgary mother facing second-degree murder charges in the death of her month-old baby aided in their investigation.

Homicide Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus said investigators found the teen mom’s Facebook postings, which indicated she had been drinking within 24 hours of Daniel Herchak’s death. Shelby Herchak’s Facebook page has since been taken down.

“The evidence collected supports charges of second-degree murder,” Andrus said, adding that the baby’s autopsy results were also very “significant” in deciding what charges to pursue.

“We believe the injuries were caused by one or more impacts with a solid object or against a solid object.”

Herchak was home with her parents at the time of the incident, but Andrus said she was the only one with the baby and there were no witnesses, though he said the family is being co-operative.

Herchak’s mother called for medical assistance.

Herchak’s former Facebook page showed posted messages days before her son’s death about meeting friends at a bar, and she had other conversations about being hung over.
