Families suing Tschetter

A multimillion-dollar lawsuit has been filed against a trucker convicted and sentenced earlier this year for the manslaughter deaths of five people.

Calgary attorney Jennie McMordie, who represents the victims’ families, filed a statement of claim yesterday in the Calgary Court of Queen’s Bench against Daniel Tschetter, who is serving five-and-a-half years for five counts of manslaughter.

“This is a claim following a wrongful death and I think the statement really speaks for itself,” she told Metro.

The civil suit seeks over $3 million in damages from Tschetter as well as C&J Construction, where he worked when he smashed a gravel truck into a car carrying Melaina Hovdebo, her son Zachary Morrison, 16 months, Chris Gautreau, and his daughters Kiarra, 6, and Alexia, 9.

The claim is being filed on behalf of Previna Gautreau and Lee Morrison, parents of the children killed in the crash.
