Less than a year after Dawn Schumaker and her two sons moved into a Habitat for Humanity home, they’re being forced to pack their bags and find a new place to live.
“I don’t know where we’re going to go,” Schumaker said from her Kirkness-area home yesterday.
Schumaker and her 11- and 15-year-old sons moved into the home in October.
She says she received an eviction notice from Habitat in July, citing various rule infractions, including housing five pets, missed payments and household neglect.
Though Habitat officials would not reveal specifics about the file, Habitat spokeswoman Wanda Dennelly-Lesjack insisted each family is phoned as a warning when broken rules pile up.
“It’s not like if you break one little rule, you get kicked out,” Dennelly-Lesjack said. “It’s not about one or two little things, it’s a list of things that people break.”
Schumaker claims she never received a call. Though she admits she hasn’t phoned Habitat to attempt a resolution, she says an appeal request she sent via email was ignored.
“People make mistakes,” Schumaker said. “Sometimes, people deserve a second chance. We deserve a second chance.”
