Family of hospitalized man pleads for info

As her uncle clings to life in a Calgary hospital, an Ontario woman is pleading for anyone with information about how he got there to come forward.

Dina Crafts and her mother, Nancy, flew to the city from London, Ont., to be at John Crafts’ bedside after the 54-year-old man was taken to hospital on March 11. He remains on life-support.

“Mortified. Stunned. Couldn’t believe it,” the woman said of her family’s reaction to news Crafts was found face-down in an alley with extensive head injuries.

“He’s hooked up to a bunch of machines. If we take him off, he’ll pass … but they haven’t said it’s totally hopeless,” she said. “He’ll never be the same.”

The man’s family said he couldn’t stay away from Calgary, a city he loves dearly, and they want to know who would leave him in the streets to die.

Det. Mike Ruark said Crafts was found by a passerby just four blocks from his home in an alley in the 5200 block of 8 Avenue SE, but police don’t have any evidence of how he got there.

“We don’t know where it happened or what happened,” he said, adding anyone with information needs to step forward.
