Fantasy football add drop advice: Chris Thompson, Cam Newton, Kirk Cousins

Fantasy Football, Add, Drop, Chris Thompson, Cam Newton

Add and drop Fantasy football advice on Chris Thompson, Cam Newton and Kirk Cousins ahead of Week 3 of the NFL season. It is crazy to believe how bad some of the numbers are for big name QBs early in the season.

Chris Thompson, RB, Redskins

Thompson will be one of the biggest adds this week in fantasy football due to the rib injury to RB Rob Kelley. The San Diego Union-Tribune speculated Monday that Kelley should be able to return in 2-3 weeks, but you could do worse than starting Thompson into early October. Thompson won’t give you any 100-yard rushing days, but he’s dynamic in the Redskins’ passing attack. He was targeted seven times (pretty impressive for an RB) by Kirk Cousins Sunday against the Rams, and the week prior he was targeted five times. Consider Thompson the perfect stop-gap for your team if you’re looking for an RB2 to give you solid points these next few weeks.

Cam Newton, QB, Panthers

Three of the four best fantasy football QBs through two weeks of the 2017 NFL season are available in most fantasy leagues. Alex Smith, Carson Wentz and Trevor Siemian all have better numbers so far than Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan, Ben Roethlisberger and the guy we’re talking about here – Cam Newton.

Newton has been a bottom 16 QB fantasy-wise so far. Here’s a look at his stats for Week 1 versus the 49ers and Week 2 versus the Bills.

49ers: 14 of 25 – 171 yards – 2 TD – 1 INT, Rush: 6 attempts for 3 yards

Bills: 20 of 32 – 228 yards – 0 TD, Rush: 5 attempts for 27 yards

Cam will never put up Peyton Manning numbers in the passing game, but his fantasy value in the run game has always helped matters. So far this season, he does not look like his dynamic self as he’s battling several “minor” injuries.

Luckily for Cam and Cam owners, the Panthers play the Saints and their deplorable defense this coming weekend. Ride Cam for Week 3, but it might be smart to pick-up another QB on waivers this weekend to get ahead of things.

Kirk Cousins, QB, Redskins

Like Newton, Cousins is a bottom 16 QB so far this fantasy football season. Cousins put up just 179 yards passing against the Rams Sunday and in Week 1 he was below average against the Eagles, throwing a pick and completing on 57.5 of his passes.

The Redskins’ running game has been impressive as highlighted above with Thompson, but the passing game has been pretty close to dreadful. Cousins hasn’t had a standout fantasy game since Thanksgiving Day of last year – a game in which he relied on DeSean Jackson, who is now in Tampa Bay. Also missing this season is Cousins-whisperer Kyle Shanahan, who is now the HC of the Niners.
