Fantasy sports: Dancing on the ceiling

Somehow, the old saying, “dance with the girl you brought,” got tied into fantasy football.

t’s strange because most people heavily involved in fantasy football don’t know too much about girls, dancing or any combination of the two. It’s also a poor strategy for roster management during crunch time.

The idea that we should start a certain player because he led us to this point is silly. Although this week has more importance, it’s completely independent of prior weeks. We start our best option, which can be tricky to figure out:

Trending up

At this point in the season, strange things start to happen. Hurt players on bad teams sit out longer and coaches use the final four games to evaluate young talent. We need to get on board early with the Bryce Brown and Danario Alexander types. Kenny Britt and Jared Cook are prime candidates to take advantage of their situation. Marcedes Lewis is emerging in?Jacksonville. Pierre Garcon is healthy and showing difference-making ability. Rams rookie Chris Givens is a player.

Trending down

We can’t keep going back to guys that have gone in the tank. Brandon Lloyd

hasn’t topped 45 yards since Week 6. Ryan?Mathews doesn’t have his coach’s trust. We can find tight ends more involved in their team’s gameplan than Vernon Davis. We don’t have to dance with the big names.

Garbage to gold

Points we accumulate in the fourth quarter of a blowout still count. And at this point in the season, we can safely project who will be in garbage time. Carson Palmer has rode this to 294.3 passing yards per game. Chad Henne is a legit option as the Jags abandon the run. The Chargers fall behind weekly. Adjust.

NFL pickups

Alex Green

RB, Packers

James Starks is down again, this time with a knee injury. Green has proven to be a middling talent, but the workload will be there.

Tony Scheffler

TE, Lions

Thanks to the Ryan Broyles injury and Titus Young situation, Scheffler is now acting as the Lions’ slot receiver. Major upside here.

Montell Owens

RB, Jaguars

Owens is really a fullback-type and special teams ace. But he’ll carry the load Sunday with Rashad Jennings and Maurice Jones-Drew out.
