Fashion grads to strut their stuff

Proof of four years hard work by Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s fashion grads will be walking the runway tomorrow for the annual fashion show at River Rock Show Theatre.

The 33 grads, who will soon receive their degrees in Bachelor of Fashion Design and Technology, have been working tirelessly stitching and sewing to finish three of their 20-piece collections that will appear on the runway.

“We are all vibrating with excitement right now,” says fourth-year fashion student and media liaison Mikki Fox, who will showcase three baby boomer cocktail dresses on the big night.

The fashion wing at the university is filled with students doing last minute stitches at sewing machines and making final alterations to dresses and coats that rest on the mannequins.

Fox says the students strive to put on a professional production and all have spent the last year planning the event, creating their collections and marketing for the big day.

“It will be rewarding seeing the product of the last four years finally come together,” she adds. “There is such a camaraderie between all the students, we’re excited for each other.”

The show features a wide variety of designs as each student focused on a different niche — everything from maternity pieces and vintage-style clothes to muscular men’s designs and flamingo dresses.

And while nerves may be a part of the night when the lights go on and the music begins to play, Fox and the rest of the Class of 2010 believe the show will be a hit, one that raises the bar for future grads.

It takes place during Vancouver Fashion Week with three one-hour showings throughout the day.

Nearly 1,000 people will be in attendance for the 7:30 p.m. show, which has been sold out for several days, but tickets are still available for the two matinees at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
