A father accidentally shot and killed his teenageson at a gun range Sunday in Sarasota, Florida, after a spent shell casing bounced into his shirt.

William Brumby, 64, was at High Noon Gun Range with his daughter, 12, and two sons, ages 24 and 14, around 3 p.m. Sunday.Brumby was firing rounds in the far-right shooting lane, according to footage and witness statements, when a shell casing ricocheted off the wall and dropped down his shirt.

Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement thatBrumby used his right hand, which was holding the firearm, to remove the casing. While doing so, pointed the gun behind him and accidentally fired. The bullet hit his 14-year-old son, Stephen Brumby.

Stephen was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. He died from his injuries, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

The investigation into the teen’s death is ongoing, butthere are no charges pending against William Brumby at this time.

High Noon operates a gun shop and shooting range with nine lanes anda variety of classes for beginner and experience shooters, according to its website.

An October 2013 Sarasota Herald-Tribune article identified High Noon as possibly one of the safest indoor shooting ranges ever designed.

Since news of the shooting broke, critics have taken to High Noon’s Facebook page, calling shop owners “morons” and posting news of Stephen Brumby’s death.
