Final preparations underway for Sir Paul

Good Day Sunshine.

That’s what organizers of Sir Paul McCartney’s only Canadian tour date this year are hoping Halifax will have this Saturday.

And so far, the weather forecast looks “terrific,” said promoter Harold MacKay on Thursday. “Twenty-three degrees and sunny.”

MacKay, president of Power Promotional Events, said ticket holders should start showing up at the Halifax Common early, at 3:30 or 4 p.m., “and come prepared to stay until midnight.”

Entertainment will kick off between 4 and 5 p.m., he said, with McCartney expected to hit the stage around 8:30.

“It’s going to be a long day,” MacKay said.

But well worth it, with Halifax based-bands Wintersleep and the Joel Plaskett Emergency opening and the potential for a couple more acts to be added to the lineup, including Winnipeg singer-songwriter Sierra Noble, MacKay said. McCartney still has to give his stamp of approval to any unconfirmed acts.

MacKay couldn’t say how many tickets have been sold, simply saying, “We’ve set up the site to (accommodate) 60,000 people and … we’re on the road to do that.”

He said corporate tents are sold out and there are only a couple hundred VIP seats left, which cost $316 each. General admission tickets cost $136.

As for when McCartney and crew will touch down in Nova Scotia, MacKay said the music superstar should land Friday afternoon, while his British and American contingents arrived Wednesday night.

“They think the concert site is beautiful,” MacKay said.

The 500 to 600 crew members working on the site this week should complete setup by Friday evening.

“It’s a big production,” MacKay said. “You’re building a mini-city inside the city.”

McCartney will likely hold a sound check the evening before and the morning of his much-anticipated Canadian concert, MacKay said, adding the event itself isn’t to be missed, especially with new material expected to be performed.

“It will be history-making.”
