Fire destroys eight-unit Kanata condo

For the third time in a week, residents of an apartment building in Ottawa have been left homeless by a fire.

Early yesterday morning an eight-unit, three-storey condominium building in Kanata was destroyed by a fire that is estimated to have caused $2 million in damage.

According to Ottawa Fire Service public information officer Pierre Savary, emergency crews responded to a 911 call at 408 and 407 Stratas Court at 5:56 a.m.

By 6:04, it was raised to a four alarm fire, with 65 firefighters in 23 vehicles at the scene.

James Laniyan, owner of the unit at 407 Stratas Court, was told by one of the tenants renting his building that the fire came through the wall separating it from the neighbouring unit at 408.

By the time the tenant had escaped, the fire had moved into the roof and engulfed the front half of the building.

No one was injured, but the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been called in to investigate due to the extent of the damage.

Just after noon on Saturday, a fire destroyed a three-storey row house at 130 and 132 Mann Ave. in Sandy Hill, leaving 28 people homeless.

No one was injured in that fire.

Along with last Monday’s fire that destroyed an 18-unit building in the Glebe, and a house fire in Nepean on Thursday, it has been a busy week for Ottawa firefighters.
