A fire broke out overnight in a Paxton animal shelter taking the lives of dozens of dogs and cats.
The shelter, Sweatpea Friends of Rutland Animals, was reportedly engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived at the scene. Firemen worked hard to save as many animals as possible.
“We didn’t think we’d be able to save any of the animals. That was our first goal – to do that. We were just trying to get to the dogs if we could,” Paxton Fire Chief Jay Conte told WCVB . Rescuers were reportedly able to save five dogs and one cat, but it’s estimated that 17 dogs and 39 cats were killed by the blaze.
The shelter quickly put out a red alert on social media, asking for any help to treat injured animals.
